I have organized this project into chapters corresponding to the periods and themes of Max's life. Except for Chapters Four and Five they are based on interviews with Max taped between August and November of 1978. The first three took place in social situations, with a variety of friends and family about. Most of the conclusion was drawn from a conversation between Max and myself at his hotel.
